WaHTEG seeks to equip interested people (especially the youth) with entrepreneurial skills for a lifetime employment. We position them favourably to meet the challenges of today and the future and be able to turn weaknesses and threats to opportunities and strengths. Our Strategy for professional empowerment through water access and quality management is in four (4) phases:
Phase 1: It involves the mobilization of social capital by which interested and determined people apply and screened for admission.
Phase 2: It involves intensive education and training activities in water quality management to build the professional skills of participants. The training covers the main component and sub-components of the Professional Development Framework. It introduces participants to the concepts, procedures, technical know-how, business strategy and roll-out plans in the water sector. Upon successful completion the trainees are enabled to establish in geographical areas of the country where they work to promote water access and safe drinking water and also, earn decent livelihood.
Phase 3: It involves conversion of social capital to economic capital through low risk and business venture identification and investment. This is the critical path of the professional development during which the trainees are supported to identify their business preference and also, develop business plans for start-up support. This is the self-negotiated economic empowerment phase where the trainees establish themselves in economic ventures. Having been equipped with entrepreneurial skills and incentives, the trainees have the opportunity to:
- Pool resources or form cooperatives, partnerships or joint ventures
- Become entrepreneurs in water quality products and systems, to produce and retail quality water in commercial quantities for homes, offices and industries.
- Provide technical and advisory services to the community, domestic, commercial and industrial users of water.
- Form advocacy organisations in pursuance of the safe water agenda, and
- Seek employment in any of the major water manufacturing and packaging companies.
Phase 4: This is the Monitoring and Evaluation Phase where WaHTEG carries out follow-up activities to quality assure on-the-job performance of the graduates and document their success stories.
Approach
In line with the Professional Development Framework, our approach towards water quality professional skills-building for job creation is in 4 stages,
Stage 1. Classroom work to acquire knowledge of the conceptual framework for water access and water quality management.
Stage 2. Job training to build how-to-do skills through practice and industrial attachment.
Stage 3. Examination of trainees involving practical, written and oral tests upon which a general Certificate of Successful Completion is awarded.
Stage 4. The award of Professional Certificate in Water Quality Management based on demonstrated implementation of Exit Plan.

The content of the programme is intensive in order to give the trainees skills backed by theory to diagnose and solve practical water access and quality challenges. It emphasizes the various opportunities for self-employment. Over twenty topics are covered. Examples include:
- Theory: Introduction and History of Water Systems
- Water Problems: symptoms-causes and treatment
- Filtration and purification processes – Products and systems
- Product installation methods
- Simple geological survey tools and how applied
- Water diagnostic and analytical tools
- Techniques of borehole drilling
- Water integrity management
- Water facility operations and management
- Sales, marketing and lead generation
- Business set-up: the fundamentals
